Scientists from the Institute of Food Research found that serving up two food components together – sulforaphane (a plant chemical) and selenium (an essential mineral) could make them up to 13 times more powerful at attacking cancer together than they are alone. Cauliflower is a good source of sulforaphane and chicken contains selenium so try and include them both in your Sunday roast.

ADD OLIVE OIl… TO TOMATOES

Tomatoes are packed with vitamins and fibre. They’re also a rich source of carotenoid nutrients like lycopene, thought to help reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease.

Studies have shown that when tomatoes are eaten with healthy fats (like olive oil) the body absorbs masses more of these carotenoid phytochemicals. So saute your tomatoes in olive oil when cooking up a dish, or drizzle on when serving a salad.

ADD AVOCADO… TO LETTUCE

Next time you’re having a salad, do your eyesight a favour and add some avocado to the mix. Green leafy veg (like Romaine lettuce) contains the nutrient lutein, which is thought to reduce the risk of macular degeneration and cataracts. It’s better absorbed by the body if eaten with a little healthy mono-unsaturated fat – which is where a few slices of avocado do their duty.
